Motorcycle accident snarls traffic near Smokey Point; 2 injured

ARLINGTON -- Southbound traffic on I-5 was backed up for miles Saturday morning after a motorcycle accident near Arlington sent two people to the hospital.
The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the motorcycle, carrying two people, tried to merge onto southbound I-5 from Smokey Point, Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary said.
The driver lost control of the motorcycle, Leary said.
Both he and the passenger were thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the southbound lanes.
"Luckily they were not run over," Leary said.
The driver, 40, and passenger, 46, are Everett residents.
Both were taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. The passenger had a serious head injury and other injuries, Leary said.
A description of the driver's injuries was not available.
I-5 was blocked for up to 45 minutes until troopers could open a shoulder. The accident scene was cleared by about 11:30 a.m.
