The fifth annual Stanwood Camano Island Soap Box Derby is scheduled throughout today. Nearly 70 drivers, some as young as 7, are scheduled to race their cars down on the 276th Street NW hill in east Stanwood.
The race has grown since 2008 when 40 racers took the first run down what the community now calls “Derby Hill.”
Drivers compete for the honor of representing their community at the annual All-America Soap Box Derby championship race in Akron, Ohio.
The Stanwood Camano Island Soap Box Derby Program is supported by community donations, businesses sponsorships and volunteers who plan, promote and raise money for the annual event.
The day begins with a pancake breakfast for all from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center, 7430 276th St. NW.
