It’s been quite a senior season for Everett High School’s Jody Barhanovich (above). She played on Everett’s volleyball, basketball and golf teams, becoming a four-year letter winner in each sport, and she did it all while maintaining a 3.89 grade point average. For the second year in a row she was a captain on the basketball team, helping the Seagulls improve from 3-17 her freshman year to 12-8 during the most recent season. On the golf course, Barhanovich finished second in districts to return to state, where she finished 19th. Because of her feats, the Seagulls senior was named the Class of 2012 Girl Athlete of the Year. Herald writer David Krueger recently sat down with her:

What was the top moment of your high school career?
I’d probably say, there are two things. Going to state my sophomore year for volleyball. We hadn’t gone to state for a couple years, and Everett’s team hadn’t placed at state for over 50 years. My team placed eighth, so it was a really big deal. We were really proud. Also, lettering 12 times in my high school career, because I guess no girl had done that at my high school before. So that was pretty cool.
Did you have any free time in high school?
Not that much. I played three sports and club volleyball. All the weekends, through the end of spring, I’d play basketball for a summer league. I really didn’t have that much free time. It was frustrating and a little annoying but I got used to it.

What will you most miss?
Probably playing sports for a high school and hanging out with your friends. I’ll miss being able to say, ‘Let’s go to a baseball game,’ on a whim. I feel like I won’t be able to do that with the group of friends I have. And not having that time now with studying. I feel like I’ll really miss my friends.
What are your future plans?
I plan to go to Washington State University and I think I’m going to study education or interior design, but I’m not sure which one. Maybe both. I might try to play for the WSU club volleyball team, and see if I can walk on for the actual team, but that’s just kind of an idea.
Who was particularly helpful to you the past four years?
My parents. They are my support system. They would do anything for me. They never missed a game. They were very supportive and I never would’ve gotten through it without them.
How do you feel about going off to college?
I’m really excited. But I’m also really scared and nervous. It’s kind of a new thing. Everything’s changing and it’s kind of nerve wracking but I’m excited for the experience.
