Marysville debris fire ruled an arson

MARYSVILLE -- A fire that started in a large pile of debris in Marysville on Wednesday night has been ruled an arson.
The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m. in the 11600 block of State Avenue, just north of 116th Street NE.
That area has a long history of problems linked to transients living in unsafe conditions, Marysville Fire Marshal Tom Maloney said.
The city, local police, the fire district and the Tulalip Tribes have been working together to clean up the area and discourage people from living there, he said.
On Wednesday night, someone apparently set fire to a pile of debris on the land. The pile included roughly 300 tires, Maloney said. The flames and heavy smoke attracted quite a bit of attention from neighbors and TV news.
Fire crews stayed at the scene several hours Wednesday night and returned Thursday morning, Maloney said. They planned to separate out the tires and extinguish any remaining hot spots.
There were no injuries and no property damage. The investigation has been referred to Marysville police.
