Ryan Murray goes second overall to Columbus (updated, 5:45)

Silvertips captain Ryan Murray was just selected second overall in the NHL draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The defenseman becomes the highest-ever NHL draft pick in franchise history.

Watching Murray's reaction on the television broadcast, it was very measured. No big celebrations or smiles, just all business. Would one expect anything else from Murray, the most professional player I've seen play for Everett?

Murray will be reunited with his former coach in Everett, Craig Hartsburg. Hartsburg was just hired by the Blue Jackets as an assistant coach. On the broadcast, Columbus general manager Scott Howson said the connection wasn't why the pick was made, but that he had a long talk with Hartsburg about Murray. And I know Hartsburg would have had nothing but effusive praise for Murray.

This pick probably seals Murray's fate to the NHL, however, barring a lockout. Columbus has a history of keeping it's 19-year-old first-round picks from the WHL, rather than sending them back to juniors. Portland's Ryan Johansen was kept last season, and Vancouver's Gilbert Brule was kept several years back.
