Frogs stretch win streak to 5 games

KEIZER, Ore. -- Everett third baseman Patrick Kivlehan hit his first professional home run and infielder Chris Taylor continued his hot hitting to help the AquaSox extend their winning streak to five games with a 7-5 Northwest League victory over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Friday night.
Kivlehan, the Mariners' fourth-round pick in this year's draft, launched a two-run homer off Volcanoes starter Mario Rodriguez in the first inning and added an RBI single in the third. Taylor finished 3-for-5 with a RBI and is hitting .400. He has reached base in all 15 games this season.
Center fielder Michael Faulkner, designated hitter Jean Acevedo and catcher Marcus Littlewood each went 2-for-4 as the Sox piled up a season-high 13 hits.
Catcher Dashenko Ricardo had two hits and two RBI for Salem-Keizer (6-9).
The Everett offense immediately went to work on Rodriguez, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Taylor and Faulkner opened the game with back-to-back singles. Taylor came around to score on a balk by Rodriguez and Acevedo knocked in Faulkner with a double. Kivlehan followed with his homer over the left-field wall to give the Sox a 4-0 lead.
Frogs starter Ambioris Hidalgo, recently sent to Everett after going 2-9 with a 5.67 ERA at Class A Clinton, struggled at times, allowing three runs and issuing four walks, but he lasted five innings to earn the win.
After being spotted the early cushion, Hidalgo (1-0) nearly gave it back in the second. The right-hander allowed three runs in the frame including a Joseph Rapp solo homer. But Hidalgo escaped with the lead, striking out Charles Jones looking on a 3-2 pitch to leave the bases loaded.
Hidalgo's effort was enough as the Frogs continued to pummel Rodriguez. In the third, Littlewood hit an RBI double and scored on Kivlehan's single. Taylor restored the four-run lead in the fourth, doubling in second baseman Ketel Marte for a 7-3 Everett lead.
The Volcanoes cut Everett's advantage to 7-5 with two runs in the sixth off Sox reliever Scott DeCecco.
Salem-Keizer threatened again in the eighth after Sox pitcher Blake Hauser gave up a single and two walks to load the bases with two outs. But once again Jones couldn't make the Sox pay, lining out to Marte to end the inning.
Oliver Garcia closed out the ninth for his fourth save of the year.
The two teams play again today. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
