A second chance

Wait just a second: International timekeepers will add a leap second to official clocks at midnight tonight to keep the sun in step with the Earth's rotation. The tidal pull of the moon is slowing the planet, making the leap seconds necessary on occasion.

We know the younger folks will take advantage of that extra second to squeeze a little more fun into the evening, but we've already made plans to use our extra 60th of a minute for more sleep.

Grand theft dino: A Missoula, Mont., truck stop has offered a reward of a $250 gas card for information leading to the return of its 12-foot-long by 6-foot tall Sinclair dinosaur, which disappeared June 21 from a hill near the truck stop.

Police later found a desperate motorist who had run out of gas, trying to shove the dinosaur tailfirst into his fuel tank.

No, Mom, Elmer's won't work: Seattle's Museum of Flight is preparing to welcome the Space Shuttle Trainer, a mock-up of the space shuttles that NASA astronauts used in training for space flight. The mock-up, which includes the crew cabin and payload bay, will arrive in sections over the summer.

But museum officials have already hit a snag: After checking with hobby shops throughout Western Washington, they haven't found a tube of plastic cement large enough for the assembly.
