More sweeping

The AquaSox returned home Sunday having completed a three-game road sweep of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. It was Everett’s second consecutive series sweep as they topped the Vancouver Canadians in three games at home before departing for Oregon.

The Sox played well out of the gate this season, building an early lead in the Northwest League’s West Division, and they continued their strong play in Keizer.

“We had a good series,” Everett manager Rob Mummau said. “We got some timely hitting, some really strong starting pitching, and our defense was good. Those are the three key ingredients you need to win games.”

No one player carried the load for Everett in the series as the Sox received contributions across the board. That included the first home runs of the season by Alfredo Morales and Patrick Kivlehan. For Kivlehan it was his first homer as a professional.

All three games were close, each being decided by two runs. Two of those games required the Sox to score late in the game as they came from behind late to win the opener 6-4, then tallied twice in the 11th inning to win the finale 4-2.

“I think we had two games against Spokane (in the first home series of the season) where we came back in the last inning,” Mummau said. “I think that kind of gave our team confidence and it snowballed after that. The team’s playing well and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Tanabe promoted

The Sox returned home minus one more player as catcher Carlton Tanabe was promoted to High Desert of the Class A California League.

Tanabe appeared in eight of Everett’s first 16 games, batting .160 in 25 at-bats. It’s already been a busy season for Tanabe as he’s seen time with Everett, High Desert and Clinton of the Class A Midwest League.

Everett’s season is just over two weeks old, and Tanabe is already the fourth member of the opening-day roster who’s been moved. Starting pitchers Mayekol Guaipe and Seon Gi Kim and reliever Robert Shore are all currently playing in Clinton. Tananbe’s promotion left Everett with the somewhat barebones total of 11 position players on the roster.

“All the guys, I feel comfortable putting them in the starting lineup on any given night,” Mummau said. “So we’ll do the best with what we’ve got, and everybody’s getting playing time.”

Big wigs

A number of members of the Seattle Mariners brass stopped by Sunday to greet the Sox on their return home. Among those were special assistant to the general manager Roger Hansen, director of minor-league and international administration Hide Sueyoshi, and minor-league pitching coordinator Rick Waits.
