Community Roundup: USA Curling honors Lynnwood couple

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Brady and Cristin Clark, a husband and wife from Lynnwood, have been named Team of the Year by USA Curling after winning this year’s United States mixed doubles championship and then placing fourth at the world mixed doubles championships in Turkey.

Their placing at the world championships was the best ever for a mixed doubles team from the United States.

The award marks the first time USA Curling has named a mixed doubles twosome its Team of the Year. In previous years, the honor went to either mixed foursomes, or four-man or four-woman teams.

“We are very honored to be recognized as the first mixed doubles team to earn the Team of the Year Award,” Brady Clark said in a USA Curling release. “I think with the sport’s revolution and the possibility of having it added to the 2018 Olympics, it’s good timing and I’m happy that the committee and (USA Curling) has recognized us.”

“It feels incredible, and it is really an honor to be the first-ever mixed doubles Team of the Year,” Cristin Clark said in the release. “We really enjoy mixed doubles as we can curl together and to win this award as a team is very cool.”

The Clarks were previously honored as Team of the Year in 2009 along with their mixed teammates Philip Tilker and Bev Walter.

Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. — Brittany Aanstad from Lake Stevens placed 24th in qualifying for the women’s javelin Friday at the United States Olympic Trials. The top 12 moved on to the finals.

Aanstad’s best throw was 148 feet, 4 inches. She fouled on her second try, then threw 148-0 on her final attempt.

Kara Peterson of Team Asics earned the top seed into the finals with a mark of 198-5.

Aanstad competed this past spring for Seattle Pacific University. A senior, she earned a spot in Olympic trials by winning the NCAA Division II championship in May in Pueblo, Colo., with a throw of 168-1.

Golf

Chris Hatch of Mukilteo won the USGA Junior Amateur Championship Qualifier held June 26 at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton.

Hatch shots rounds of 73 and 71 for a two-day total of even-par 144. He won by five strokes.

The victory qualifies Hatch for the 65th USGA Junior Amateur Championship that’s scheduled for July 16-21 in Stratham, N.H.

Baseball

Washington State University baseball players Derek Jones and Taylor Ard were named last week to the 2012 All-West Region Teams selected by Rawlings and the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Ard earned first-team honors for the second straight year. He hit .332 this spring and ranked in the Pac-12’s top 10 in home runs (12), RBI (50), total bases (127) and slugging percentage (.577). A seventh-round pick of the Seattle Mariners in last month’s major-league draft, Ard plays for the Class A Everett AquaSox.

Jones, a native of Snohomish, was a second-team selection. He batted .335 for the Cougars this spring and ranked among the Pac-12 leaders in doubles (17), home runs (nine), on-base percentage (.438), slugging percentage (.574) and walks (31). He was selected in the eighth round of the draft by the Colorado Rockies and plays for the Class A Tri-City Dust Devils.
