TULALIP — A record $41,000 was raised in a three-mile walk on Saturday in Tulalip to benefit cystic fibrosis research.
The total far surpassed the previous record in the four years the event has been held in Tulalip.
That record of $25,000 was set just last year, said Megan Talbot, development manager for the state chapter of the national Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The walk began at the Tulalip Amphitheatre.
The co-chairwomen for the event were Kelsie Dry and Brandy Krug, who live in the Tulalip-Marysville area and are parents of children with cystic fibrosis, Talbot said.
“It brought tears to their eyes when I announced the total,” she said.
About 350 people attended, 100 more than last year. In addition to a greater number of people, “all the teams in general stepped up the fundraising,” Talbot said.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting 30,000 people nationwide. It impairs the ability to breathe and absorb nutrients from food, and people diagnosed with the disease have a life expectancy of about 37 years.
About 90 percent of the money raised goes to research to find a cure for the disease, Talbot said.
