Monroe could put annexation on ballot

MONROE -- The city is considering annexing the 264-acre parcel of land named Roosevelt Ridge.

Tuesday, the City Council is discussing putting the annexation on the November ballot so people living there can decide whether they want to join the city.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 806 W Main St.

There are 290 people living within the area and about 200 of them are registered voters. Roosevelt Ridge is north of the city.

There are single-family homes in the area, but most of it is undeveloped, city's planning and permitting manager Paul Popelka said.

The plan is to develop the area to have more houses and businesses, Popelka said.

The proposed bypass is also designed to go through this land.

If the annexation is approved, people living there may see a slight increase in their utility bills, but they would see a decrease in property taxes. The city would provide sewer, police and fire services as well.
