The Edmonton Rush announced on Wednesday that they have signed general manager and head coach Derek Keenan to a one-year contract for the 2013 season.
Keenan returns for his fourth season as GM and head coach of the Rush, who despite finishing with a 6-10 record in the 2012 regular season, made a run to the 2012 NLL Champion’s Cup, losing to the Rochester Knighthawks.
“Coach Keenan’s dedication, work ethic and preparation to the team is the staple for the structure we need in order to return to the championship in 2013,” Rush owner Bruce Urban said.
Keenan was happy to return to Edmonton.
“There is really no place I want to be,” he said. “Edmonton is a top-notch sports city and I think we are on the verge of augmenting the ‘City of Champions’ moniker. The ownership is solid and together we have built a talented and athletic young core group of players. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I really look forward to that challenge.
The Rush should be even better in 2013, they own the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2012 NLL Entry draft, which is tentatively scheduled for this September. The Rush acquired that pick this past season in a mid-season trade with the Washington Stealth that sent the rights to forward Athan Iannucci to the Stealth for transition player Paul Rabil. Rabil refused to report to the Rush after the trade.
