BELLINGHAM — Washington Transportation Department crews will be able to park their snow blowers and plows on Tuesday when they finish work and open the road to Artist Point.
It’s the last three miles of the Mount Baker Highway above the ski resort. It’s also the parking lot for the Forest Service’s Heather Meadows visitor center and a number of trails above the 5,000-foot elevation.
Transportation Department spokesman Dustin Terpening said it’s the last Washington mountain highway to open, and it’s heavily used by hikers before snows close it again in late September or early October.
The Bellingham Herald reported there was so much snow last year, the road to Artist Point was never cleared. So this is the first time cars will be able to reach it since October 2010.
