Everett beach parking restricted

EVERETT -- If you want a day at the beach in Everett, better come early.
Access to Howarth Park, the city's main public beach, will be restricted until September.
The main road leading into the park has been closed since January after wet weather caused a landslide.
The beach is still open, but the majority of the parking is closed.
Fewer than 30 spots in the upper and middle lots remain. Those spots fill quickly on sunny days.
The city had hoped a contractor they hired could take down a few hundred hazardous trees in about three weeks, and get the main road open for the summer.
Now that timeline has been pushed back until Aug. 31, said Dave Davis, public works director.
The work is taking longer because an important piece of equipment broke down. Other than the delay, the city is satisfied with the work to date, Davis said.
The city is expecting to pave the parking lot when the contractor is finished.
"Our belief is the latest it will be finished is Sept. 1," he said.
The city warned that parking in areas posted "no-parking" or "tow-away zone" could result in tickets for the violation.
Everett does have another sandy beach, Jetty Island. Visitors must take a free ferry from the 10th Street Boat Launch to get to the beach.
On nice days, the ferry can fill up quickly. Everett residents may make reservations for the ferry. Call 425-257-8304.
