VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Everett AquaSox couldn’t score against the Vancouver Canadians Thursday night.
Friday afternoon the Sox couldn’t prevent the Canadians from scoring.
Everett found itself on the wrong end of a one-sided result for the second straight day, falling 14-3 Friday in Northwest League play.
The Sox couldn’t get anything going offensively in Thursday’s opener of the three-game series and were shut out with five hits in a 5-0 loss.
Art Charles, Jason Leblebijian and Carlos Ramirez all had three hits Friday to spark a 17-hit attack for Vancouver (16-9 second half, 38-24 overall). Charles’ hits included a two-run home run, while Ramirez and Dwight Smith Jr. both drove in three runs.
The Canadians teed off on Everett’s pitchers. Vancouver scored five in the bottom of the first inning, besting its four-run first in Thursday’s game, against Sox starter Scott DeCecco and never looked back.
Vancouver sent 10 men to the plate in the opening inning, with an infield RBI single by Leblebijian, a three-run triple down the first-base line by Smith and an RBI double to right by Tucker Frawley giving the Canadians a 5-0 lead.
Jamodrick McGruder, Taylor Ard and James Zamarripa each went 2-for-4 for Everett (10-14, 38-24). DeCecco (1-3) had a rough outing for the AquaSox and allowed nine runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Vancouver added another run in the third courtesy of an RBI triple to center by Ramirez.
Everett finally got on the board in the fourth when Alfredo Morales lined an RBI double to right to score Ketel Marte from second. That ended a 15-inning scoreless streak for the Sox.
But it got ugly for the Sox in the bottom of the fourth. It began when Charles slugged a two-run homer to center. After Mark Bordonaro relieved DeCecco, Newman greeted Bordonaro with an RBI double to center. Then when Frawley singled to right, a bobble by right fielder Janelfry Zorrilla allowed Newman to score. The throw came home and catcher Christian Carmichael tried to throw behind Frawley at first. The throw got down the line and Frawley came all the way around to score, making it 11-1.
The Sox got another run in the fifth on Marte’s RBI fielder’s choice grounder, then a third in the seventh courtesy of McGruder’s RBI single to left.
But Vancouver piled more on in the eighth, with Newman smacking an RBI double to right and Ramirez adding a two-run single to left to complete the scoring.
