Suspected thief arrested after being pepper-sprayed

EDMONDS -- The hunt for a suspected thief came to a tearful ending inside an Edmonds home Saturday morning.
Edmonds police arrested a 50-year-old Lynnwood man after officers shot cans of pepper spray into the house where the suspect had holed up after a short police chase.
In his attempt to hide from police, the man had broken into the home and threatened the woman living there. The woman was able to escape uninjured.
The hunt for the man had begun around 7:30 a.m. after officers received reports of a theft at the Harbor Square Athletic Club.
The first officer on the scene spotted a car leaving the area. The car was stolen and the officer recognized the driver as a suspect in a rash of thefts at the gym. The suspect led police on a short chase and eventually ditched the car and ran down an embankment.
A police dog began tracking the suspect.
That's when an officer noticed an open window and blood on the frame at a house in the 1100 block of Second Avenue S.
Police surrounded the home and determined that a woman was inside. They were able to get her out of the house safely.
The suspect refused to surrender and officers were concerned that he may have armed himself. Police were able to arrest the man after deploying the pepper spray.
The man, who recently had been released from jail, was headed back to the county lock-up for investigation of several felony crimes.
