The Marysville Hawks Select Baseball Club, a local 13 and under Sandy Koufax team comprised of kids from Marysville and Snohomish County, won the first ever Washington State Super State Championship with a 7-1 victory over the Federal Way Knights on July 18 in Mercer Island.
The Hawks’ league has two divisions, the American and National Leagues. The Hawks won the former with a 4-3 win over the Northwest Bandits on July 17. Then, Sandy Koufax organizers decided to have the two league champions face off in the inaugural Super State Championship.
“We were fortunate to have such a very successful season,” said Jason Hauck, the Marysville manager. “We set high expectations for these kids at the start of winter training back in November. They not only met those expectations, they surpassed them. There are many great baseball teams in our state, to be considered as one of them is truly an honor.”
Collin Montez, the co-MVP of the tournament, pitched all seven innings in the win against Federal Way, the National League state champions. He allowed five hits and only one run.
Trent Tingelstad, the other co-MVP, provided plenty of offense for the Hawks throughout the state tournament.
“There was a point when he was like 16-for-18 hitting,” Hauck said. “And you’re going against top guys in the state. That’s not easy to do.”
Other members of the team are Jacob Watts, Tyler Van Rensum, Tyson Human, Noah Wallace, Austin Hauck, CJ Goodman, Jacob Omer, Dylan Billings, Calvin Walker, Charlie Tait, Kyle Sexton, Zach Townsend and Nolan Lechner. Steve Van Rensum, Dave Wallace, James Tingelstad and Hauck are the coaches.
“The entire tournament was a collective team effort,” Hauck said. “From the dugout, to on the field, everyone supported one another.”
The win helped Marysville finish 6-0 at the state tournament. Hauck said the turning point of the playoffs was a back-and-forth game against the Seattle Select Black. The Hawks battled back from a six-run deficit, and defeated Seattle 13-11 to advance.
After the state championship, the Hawks had one more tournament in Moses Lake, where they finished second. That brought their overall record for the season, with tournaments, to 43-9, with an American League State Championship and the first ever Sandy Koufax Super State Championship.
“We had a pretty darned good season,” Hauck said. “We just had a great group of kids.”
