—- UPDATE, 9:30 p.m.
Wrapping up the first day …
First off, there’s been a format change. The morning practices are being scrubbed in favor of additional scrimmages. Friday morning Green will play Blue at 8:30 and White will play Red at 10:30. That means the same teams will be squaring off in both the morning and the afternoon.
Next up, here are the summaries from today’s scrimmages. Keep in mind the scorers are very unofficial because my eyesight is sketchy at best.
Green 6, White 3
Green — Manson, Sandhu, Durflinger, Fowlie, Potskin 2.
White — Cochrane, Pouliot, Bryant.
Green goalies — Pearson 14-13, Trombley 21-19.
White goalies — Desautels 10-9, Brown 12-8.
Red 8, Blue 0
Red — Jmaeff 3, Adam, Soumelidis, Omeasoo 2, Betker.
Blue — none.
Red goalies — France 2-2, Amundrud 7-7, Reynolds 8-8.
Blue goalies — Matsuba 24-19, Petit 22-19.
Now some notes and observations:
– Everett coach Mark Ferner emphasized to the players that he doesn’t want fighting at training camp, and there were no fights today.
– Goaltender Austin Lotz joined forwards Ryan Harrison (mono) and Kohl Bauml (shoulder) on the sidelines. Lotz has a minor hamstring strain and was held out as a precaution. He should be able to go later in camp.
– Everett is going to have a long and rangy defense for a few years. Between Austin Adam, Mirco Mueller and Ben Betker the Tips have three tall, mobile d-men aged 18 or younger. By the way, the Tips apparently will spell Mirco’s name Mueller instead of Muller to avoid any umlaut issues.
– Speaking of long and rangy, there are some seriously tall players in camp. Defenseman Tanner Cunningham is 6-foot-8, and I’m told goaltender Troy Trombley is 6-foot-7. They’re just a sampling, too. Hey fellas, this is hockey not basketball!
– I don’t think there’s any question Ty Mappin is ready. Everett’s first-round pick from last year’s bantam draft looked good. Second rounder Dawson Leedahl also looked like a player capable of making the jump to the WHL at 16.
– One 16-year-old forward who isn’t here is Mitch Skapski. I have yet to hear the full story on why Skapski, acquired from Portland in the Seth Jones trade, is absent. Skapski was at prospects camp in June.
– Among the 97s, the player who seemed to catch my eye the most was forward Jake Durflinger. The Californian, who was Everett’s ninth-round pick in this year’s bantam draft, came with the reputation of being a smaller player who wasn’t afraid to throw his body around. He not only threw some hits out there today, he also put some points on the board.
