EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox scored three times in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and went on to defeat the Yakima Bears 6-3 in Saturday night’s Northwest League game.
Alfredo Morales and Dario Pizzano, making his NWL debut after being called up from Pulaski, each had RBI singles as Everett (15-17, 43-27) sent eight men to the plate in the eighth. Michael Faulkner drove in the third run after being hit by a Victor Acosta pitch with the bases loaded.
Every Sox hitter had exactly one hit, with Taylor Ard’s three-run homer in the fifth being the big blow.
Everett reliever Grady Wood (3-0) recorded the final five outs to earn the win.
Kevin Medrano had two hits for the Bears (14-18, 35-35), while reliever Austin Platt (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs in two innings.
Yakima scored twice in the second inning off Sox starter Steve Ewing on back-to-back RBI doubles by Daniel Poma and Josh Parr. Parr was thrown out at third to end the inning after attempting to stretch his hit into a triple.
Those were the only runs Ewing allowed. The lefty went six innings, struck out four and gave up four hits.
Yakima starter Jose Martinez made life difficult for Everett through the first four innings. Making his first NWL start, the 18-year-old Dominican right-hander set down eight in a row at one point.
But Martinez walked five and Everett finally made Martinez pay for his wildness in the fifth. After walking Faulkner and Brock Hebert, Martinez fell behind Ard 3-0. Given the green light, Ard launched the next pitch over the fence in left for his 11th home run of the year to give the Sox a 3-2 advantage.
That lead would last until the seventh. A night after hitting a go-ahead homer in the ninth, Mike Lang once again hurt the Sox late. Lang took reliever Mark Bordonaro deep to left center to tie the game at 3.
