EVERETT — Alert witnesses helped police in recover evidence from a strong-arm robbery Friday that sent a 91-year-old Everett man to the hospital with cuts to his face and head.
Patrick M. Hartness, 26, allegedly struck the victim multiple times in the head, face and body before taking his money, according to court papers.
A witness who saw the assault at a convenience store in the 9900 block of 19th Avenue SE followed the suspect to a nearby fast-food restaurant. That’s where police believe the man tried to alter his appearance by changing out of a shirt worn during the robbery.
Another witness who worked at the restaurant told police he saw the suspect running from the robbery scene in a long sleeve, white-striped shirt. He later saw him go into the restaurant’s bathroom stall.
Police found the shirt believed to have been worn in the robbery in the bathroom trash can. It was taken as evidence.
The witnesses did not confront the suspect, but provided information that aided police in their investigation, officials said.
“We always appreciate that kind of help,” Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.
The victim was walking into the convenience store early Friday afternoon to pay for gas, court papers said. He was carrying at least two $100 bills.
Hartness was arrested for investigation of first-degree robbery and possessing a dangerous weapon and drug paraphernalia. He was jailed on $25,000 bail.
Police found a set of brass knuckles in his pocket, according to court papers.
The suspect also had arrest warrants for a domestic violence assault and driving with a suspended license. He has previous convictions for auto theft and drug possession.
The victim was treated for his injuries at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.
