BOISE, Idaho — The Everett AquaSox scored four runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie Friday night and went on to beat the Boise Hawks 6-4 in Northwest League baseball action.
After being shut out by Boise starter Felix Pena in the first five innings and reliever Hayden Simpson in the sixth, Everett’s rally began when Janelfry Zorrilla drew a walk to lead off the seventh. Simpson (2-4) then served up a two-run homer to Alfredo Morales to tie the game.
An inning later, Simpson allowed the first four Sox hitters to reach base. Jamodrick McGruder and Dario Pizzano both singled. Taylor Ard drew a walk to load the bases and setup Patrick Kivlehan with a prime opportunity. Kivlehan worked the count to 3-1 before driving the ball off the base of the wall in left-center field. Pinch-runner Mike Faulkner and Pizzano scored to give Everett its first lead of the game. Zorrilla greeted new pitcher Eddie Orozco with a single past a drawn-in infield to score Ard, and Orozco committed a balk during Morales’ at bat to bring home Kivlehan with the final run of the inning.
McGruder and recent additions Pizzano and Tyler Marlette each had two hits for Everett (18-19, 46-29)
Everett starting pitcher Steve Ewing (4-2) threw 71/3 innings, his longest outing of the season, and allowed two runs on eight hits to earn the victory. Both runs were created by the Hawks’ first three hitters, Gioskar Amaya, Stephen Bruno and Jeimer Candelario. Those three combined to go 6-for-8 off Ewing, while the Sox left-hander limited the rest of the order to just 2-for-18.
Ewing gave up hits on his first two pitches of the game, a single to Amaya and a double to Bruno, which extended Bruno’s hitting streak to 21 games. Candelario hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Amaya, but Sox center fielder Zorrilla threw out Bruno at third to prevent further damage.
The trio produced Boise’s second run in the third with three straight singles after Ewing had retired the first two hitters. Amaya scored on Candelario’s hit to left for a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks (23-14, 36-39) scored two runs in the ninth off Matt Vedo to give the home team some hope. Marco Hernandez had a pinch-hit RBI single and Rock Shoulders followed with an RBI double to cut Everett’s lead to 6-4 and bring the tying run to the plate. But Vedo fanned Darien Martin on a slider to end the game.
