Marysville Pilchuck’s goal to be ‘North’ champ starts tonight

Arlington and Marysville Pilchuck may not be in the same league anymore but don’t think that means this rivalry has gone cold.

In fact, Marysville Pilchuck players are eyeing what they believe can be an overall North title.

“Coach (Brandon) Carson talked to us about the fact that we play Arlington, Lake Stevens and Snohomish right off the bat,” MP linebacker Jordan Hoorn said. “So if we can beat them and take care of North 3A, we can unofficially win the whole North.”

It’s a lofty goal, but if the Tomahawks want to even have a chance at it they have to win tonight. Arlington may have lost a lot to graduation, but the Eagles have plenty of playmakers on offense and defense, including all-purpose player Skylor Elgarico and running back John Decker.

With former Arlington quarterback Blake McPherson now at Army, Hoorn, who was honored with a spot on The Seattle Times’ preseason 3A all-state team on Thursday, said Arlington may come out and try to establish the run, something it didn’t do a lot last season.

“They really ran the ball on us two years ago and I think they might do that (tonight),” said Hoorn. Arlington has won the past two games over Marysville Pilchuck, which moved down to 3A this season and out of the Wesco North 4A.
