INDEX — Search crews Monday afternoon recovered the body of a missing hiker who is believed to have died in an accident, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said.
A search and rescue unit found the 30-year-old dead Sunday, but was unable to remove the body with a helicopter because of the treacherous terrain, sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said.
Rescue personnel returned to complete the mission around 1 p.m. Monday, Ireton said.
The man and his brother had been hiking since Friday to Lake Simms, east of Index. The brothers became separated but were able to communicate by shouting to each other.
At some point, the man no longer responded to his brother’s yells. When the man reached the end of the trail and couldn’t find his brother, he called 911.
The missing hiker was reported to be experienced and equipped with extra food and clothing.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office had not released the man’s identity or details of how he died as of late Monday.
