ARLINGTON — This city and four other communities are part of a week-long food drive that begins Monday.
It’s the second annual multi-community food drive that’s part of The Helping Hands, Linking Arms program, a nation-wide campaign to provide service to those in need. The event celebrates the National Day of Service and Remembrance and honors the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
Donation boxes are up through Saturday at more than 100 businesses, churches and other organizations to collect food and other household items. Nine food banks in and around Arlington, Darrington, Marysville, Stanwood and Camano Island will receive the donations collected throughout the week.
“It’s a wonderful event,” said Donny Wilcox, a Stanwood resident who helped organize the drive. “There’s a great need for it and in light of the economy the need is even greater.”
Requested canned items include vegetables, soup, cranberry and pasta sauce. Peanut butter, cereal, pancake mix, toilet paper, laundry detergent, diapers and wipes also are needed by food banks.
In 2011, Arlington, Lakewood, Marysville, and Stanwood and Camano Island joined to fight hunger during the week of service. The food drive brought in 23,590 pounds of food, $1,200 in monetary donations and more than 830 hours of service.
Coordinators for this year’s drive hope to exceed those numbers, Wilcox said. Additional information about the food drive is available at the event’s Facebook page, North Snohomish County Day of Service Food Drive.
