Inmate accused in prison attack is from county

CONNELL -- An inmate accused of attacking corrections officers at Coyote Ridge Corrections Center on Tuesday is a former Snohomish County man serving a 20-year sentence for an Everett murder.
David Kopp, 23, is being investigated for attacking two corrections officers who were attempting to break up an assault on a colleague by another inmate.
That inmate, who is serving a life sentence, lunged at a corrections officer with a broomstick, prison officials said. Two other corrections officers immediately intervened. That's when Kopp jumped into the fray, allegedly assaulting the two back-up officers.
The corrections officers quickly subdued Kopp and the other inmate.
Three officers were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The inmates were not hurt, prison officials said.
Local police are investigating the incident. Coyote Ridge Corrections Center, located in Eastern Washington, houses inmates classified as minimum and medium security risk.
Kopp was sentenced in 2010 for the stabbing death of Derrick Everson, 21. Kopp admitted that he stabbed Everson 25 times while they were walking along a wooded trail off Broadway in Everett. Kopp told police the attack was unprovoked.
At the time of his 2009 arrest, Kopp reported that he was bipolar and hadn't taken his medication for several days because he didn't like how he felt when he mixed his prescription with alcohol.
Before Tuesday's assault, Kopp's earliest release date was September 2027. If he is convicted of custodial assault, that could add more time to his prison stay.
A Monroe inmate also is facing custodial assault charges after he reportedly attacked a corrections officer working in the Special Offender Unit. The officer was hospitalized last month with serious injuries, including broken bones.
The inmate, Jimi Hamilton, 33, allegedly tackled the officer to a concrete floor and repeatedly punched him in the face.
Hamilton is serving a 14-year sentence for robbery convictions. The Special Offender Unit houses the state's most seriously mentally ill offenders.
