Boeing has delivered United Airlines first 787 jet, the companies said Monday.

United Airlines has taken delivery of its first Boeing Co. 787, making the carrier the first in North America to operate a Dreamliner.

"As the North American launch customer, we are delighted to be getting our first 787 Dreamliner," Jeff Smisek, United president and CEO, said in a statement on Monday.

United has a total of 50 787s on order. The airline's 787 cabin is configured with 36 seats in United BusinessFirst, 72 seats in United Economy Plus and 111 seats in United Economy.

United is the sixth carrier to receive a Boeing 787. The jet maker has delivered Dreamliners to All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Chile's LAN and Air India.

In August, United announced a schedule of U.S. routes that the 787 will fly temporarily before transitioning to an international schedule.

"This 787 delivery represents the continuation in the more than 80-year partnership between our two companies," Ray Conner, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in a statement. "It reinforces United's commitment to be the world's leading airline by providing unmatched fuel efficiency and passenger comfort."

United will fly the Dreamliner to its Houston hub later this week.
