The winners of the Sultan Education Foundation Staff Leadership Awards were announced at the staff luncheon Sept. 4 at Sultan Middle School.

Every year the Education Foundation chooses a staff member from each school in the district who demonstrates exceptional leadership and commitment to education. The winners were nominated by their peers and presented with hand-blown red glass apples.

The winners are: JD Axtman from Sultan Elementary School; Jeff Gushwa from Sultan Middle School; Micki Miller from Sultan High School; and Phyllis Tubbs from Gold Bar Elementary School.

Two Mukilteo teachers recognized

Deborah Barten of Kamiak High School and Nancy Jordan of Harbour Pointe Middle School were honored Sept. 29 by the Washington Art Education Association as educators of the year.

Barten was named Art Educator of the Year, the organization's highest honor, and Jordan was recipient of the WAEA Middle Level Art Educator of the Year honor.

The two received recognition during the WAEA annual convention in Des Moines.

Local colleges named military-friendly

Everett, Edmonds and Cascadia community colleges, as well as Trinity Lutheran College in Everett, were recently named to the 2013 Military Friendly Schools by G.I. Jobs magazine.

In all, 28 of the state's 34 community and technical colleges made the list.

The magazine's list of 1,739 top-rated schools aims to help veterans narrow down where to use their post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.
