'Same Love' makes video premiere
Seattle rapper Macklemore released the music video for his song "Same Love" today and I have no problem admitting that I cried both times I watched it.
It's beautiful.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have taken some heat since releasing this song about two months ago in support of marriage equality and Referendum 74. I knew they were working on this music video and I wondered how it would all come together. Now that it's here I couldn't be more pleased. This video is so emotional and powerful and I think it's going to hit a lot of people in a very personal way.
"I believe that song is going to change the world" Jet City Stream DJ Marco Collins said when he interviewed Macklemore and Lewis at Capitol Hill Block Party this summer. I have to agree. This is one of those subjects that can divide households, friendships and offices, and to see artists like Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert stand up and say "this is what I believe" in such an honest way is really amazing.
I think lots of people wish they were brave enough to speak up about something this controversial, but it isn't always easy. Seeing someone who is a figure in the community show their support can be pretty powerful. That is exactly what has happened here.
It wasn't that long ago that I looked at Referendum 74 and felt like I didn't really have a horse in the race. I knew I believed in marriage equality and that everyone should have the right to love and marry who they pleased, but that was about it. After watching this video I realized how important it is to me see my gay friends get the same fundamental rights as anybody else.
