MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The Meadowdale volleyball team overcame sloppy play and rallied behind Sloane Morrison to win the final two sets and defeat Mountlake Terrace 3-2 in a Wesco 3A South game.
“(It was) not a pretty one but it was a win,” said Meadowdale head coach Machen Shrum. “(We were) very inconsistent in just about everything. … I don’t think I had a single player that was completely on.”
According to Shrum, the Mavericks came out strong, winning the first set and leading the second, but then were plagued by errors, which allowed surging Hawks offense to take advantage.
By the third set, the errors were threatening to take the Mavericks out of it completely. “We were never really on our game (in the third). You lose six serves, you lose by six points, it tells a lot,” said Shrum.
Feeling like she had done all she could do, Shrum took a timeout in the fourth set and just let the players talk.
“I felt like I had just really run out of things to say.” Shrum said, adding that she had tried talking strategy and tried being a cheerleader, but her players just weren’t doing a good job of listening.
“I said I can’t play for you, I can’t win this for you. If you want to win you have to come together, and that is what they did.”
Morrison (13 kills) and a crowd, which Shrum said began to wake up and get into the game a bit more, sparked the Mavericks in the fourth game and help propel Meadowdale on to win the tiebreaker 15-10.
