You can split fans of grunge into three camps.
There are Pearl Jam fans. They listen to classic rock and wear flannel.
There are Nirvana fans, art house punk-rockers through and through.
And then there are fans of the Smashing Pumpkins, clad in black, ready for a wall of sound and some bombastic angst. Comcast Arena will host that group at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, as the Smashing Pumpkins play Everett during a new stadium tour.
The Pumpkins first made a big mark in 1993 with “Siamese Dream,” their sophomore album, a multiplatinum critical sensation. The group built on that success with a grandly ambitious double-album, 1995’s “Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,” which sold twice as well and won the group its first Grammy.
Since then, the Pumpkins have had good years and bad. It has lost most of its founding members but has held on to a devout fanbase. Today, the Pumpkins carry on under the steely eyed guidance of the group’s mastermind, lead singer and lead guitarist Billy Corgan.
The band promises an epic and innovative show during its Everett stop. The Pumpkins will play the entirety of “Oceania,” its latest studio album, which has been praised as a return to form for the band. It debuted this summer at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
Then it will launch into a set of big hits and deep cuts — likely setlist candidates include “Today,” “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “Cherub Rock.”
The band will perform in front of visuals created by Sean Evans, who worked on the huge, successful tour of “The Wall,” recently completed by Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters.
Tickets are $39.50 to $49.50 at comcastarenaeverett.com or 866-332-8499.
Elsewhere, country-pop superstar Carrie Underwood will play KeyArena at 7:30 p.m. Saturday as she tours behind “Blown Away.”
That album continued the “American Idol” winner’s unbroken streak of No. 1 debuts. All four of her studio albums have topped the charts.
Tickets are $59.13 to $80.81 at ticketmaster.com or 800-745-3000.
Finally, rounding out a big week for Seattle-area stadium shows, Justin Bieber will headline the Tacoma Dome at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Like Underwood, the teen heartthrob also can claim several No. 1 albums. His most recent chart-topper, June’s “Believe,” sold a massive 374,000 copies in its first week, an impressive feat for the 18-year-old.
Tickets are sold out, but can be found at a mark-up online at stubhub.com.
Three smaller shows also will take place in Seattle, starting Friday night.
Indie rock favorites Grizzly Bear will bring its sweet harmonies and artistic introspection to the Paramount Theatre at 7 p.m. Friday as the group tours behind its new album, “Shields.”
Tickets are $31.25 at stgpresents.org or 877-784-4849.
Also Friday, and less than a dozen blocks away from Grizzly Bear’s show, Alanis Morissette — she of “Jagged Little Pill” fame — will hit the Moore Theatre as she supports her new studio album, “Havoc and Bright Lights.”
Tickets are $27 to $92.50 at stgpresents.org or 877-784-4849.
Finally, the XX, one of England’s most buzzed-about acts, will play the Paramount Theatre at 7 p.m. Saturday as it tours behind its quietly epic new album, “Coexist.”
Tickets are $33.50 at stg presents.org or 877-784-4849.
