TACOMA — Police say two boys, ages 12 and 13, were playing with a handgun Tuesday and fired it into the air outside a Lacey apartment complex because they didn’t know how to disengage it after it was cocked.
The 12-year-old also is accused of taking the .38-caliber gun onto the grounds of Nisqually Middle School on Monday and showing it to students.
The News Tribune reported that the boys were arrested Wednesday and ordered held in juvenile detention on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm. Both have criminal histories that include assault.
Deputy Prosecutor Wayne Graham said authorities are still trying to determine how the boys got their hands on the gun.
