EVERETT — After a slow start, in which Jackson won only three of its first eight league matches, the Timberwolves are now back in a position to compete for a playoff spot in the ultra competitive Wesco 4A South Division.
Lynnae George scored two goals, including the match-winner two minutes into the first overtime period, to lead the Timberwolves to their second straight league victory and move Jackson to one point behind Kamiak for the third and final playoff spot.
“This was a big win for us,” said Jackson head coach Jesslyn Kellerman. “It was the third overtime game we played this season, but our first win. It shows our team has become more confident.”
Jordy Hutchens played a free kick from about 35 yards out into the Arlington penalty area. The ball took a bounce and found George, who lashed the ball into the side netting from six yards out to end the game.
After a scoreless first half, George opened the scoring in the 50th minute, with a header off a Brittany Orlosky corner kick.
The Eagles tied the game when Arlington forward Bre Morren burst through the Jackson defense and was knocked down by a Timberwolves’ central defender in the 18-yard box to earn a penalty kick. Sophia Hitsky sent the keeper the wrong way to tie the match at 1-1 in the 69th minute.
After Hitsky’s score, both teams pushed forward in an attempt to get the winning goal, but neither generated a solid chance until George’s winner netted Jackson a valuable three points.
But as Kellerman pointed out, the Timberwolves are still in fourth place after the victory with five games left in the season.
“We can’t afford to lose games we know we can win,” Kellerman said.
