Prep football: Monroe 22, Snohomish 18

SNOHOMISH — Monroe quarterback Hunter Bingham came off the bench in the second half and engineered two touchdown drives to rally the Bearcats past Snohomish in a Wesco 4A North contest. The victory moved Monroe to the top of the North division after Arlington’s loss to Lake Stevens.

“Bingham did a great job taking over,” said Monroe head coach Dick Abrams. “He had a huge game.”

Bingham replaced starting QB Mitchell Price after Price hurt his hip in the second quarter. Bingham found Gabe Moore for a 26-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter to give the Bearcats a 16-15 lead. After Snohomish went ahead on a Collin Shelton 36-yard field goal, Bingham scored on a one-yard sneak with 5:27 left in the fourth to give Monroe a four point lead.

Snohomish drove the ball to the Monroe 34, but faced a fourth-and-one with 53 seconds left. Out of timeouts, Snohomish elected to throw for the first down, but Kyle Gionet’s pass was intercepted by Moore to snuff out the Panthers’ final chance.

“It’s a huge win for us,” said Abrams. “We now know we can do this as far as league goes…and we get Arlington next week at our house.”

The Bearcats got off to a quick start on the Panthers’ homecoming night, with Price scoring from a yard out to give Monroe a 7-0 lead in the first. Monroe extended its lead to 9-0 on a safety when a Snohomish snap hit the crossbar.

But Snohomish rallied with two straight touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 15-9 lead. The Panthers recovered a muffed punt on the Monroe 26 yard line and on the next play, tight end Kyle Yeoman caught a touchdown pass from Gionet. Garrett Stich scored on a one-yard run to give the Panthers the lead going into the half.
