SPOKANE — Spokane’s new panhandling ordinance goes into effect Saturday making it illegal to beg on the curbside of some city streets.
KXLY reported that people can use a sign to ask for help. But it’s illegal for anyone to step into the street from a corner or sidewalk to collect anything from passing cars.
The restriction applies to certain streets and roads. It’s limited mostly to the downtown area.
Spokane Police can start enforcing the panhandling ordinance Oct. 6, but may give out warnings before they start writing ticket.
Panhandlers said they aren’t happy about the new law.
