Community roundup: Legion foundation to honor local men
Those being inducted include Earl Averill from Snohomish, who played in the major leagues from 1929-41, is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and was later an American Legion commissioner; and Spiro "Spedo" Southas of Everett who was an American Legion coach in the 1950s and '60s, and later worked for the Seattle Mariners as a minor-league executive.

More than 150 horse riders from youngsters to senior citizens gathered Sept. 22-23 at the fairgrounds in Monroe for the 33rd annual Pacific Northwest O-Mok-See Championships.
The riders, from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, competed in six age groups in 10 speed events. The area winners were Alex Akins of Snohomish, junior age group champion; Alex Thomas of Snohomish, intermediate age group champion; and Brett Robinson of Arlington, senior B age group champion.
