EVERETT -- Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins played Everett's Comcast Arena Wednesday.

The Smashing Pumpkins first made a big mark in 1993 with "Siamese Dream," their sophomore album, a multiplatinum critical sensation.

The group built on that success with a grandly ambitious double-album, 1995's "Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," which sold twice as well and won the group its first Grammy.

Since then, the Pumpkins have had good years and bad. It has lost most of its founding members but has held on to a devout fanbase.

Today, the Pumpkins carry on under the steely eyed guidance of the group's mastermind, lead singer and lead guitarist Billy Corgan.

The Pumpkins played songs from "Oceania," its latest studio album, which has been praised as a return to form for the band. It debuted this summer at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

The band performed in front of visuals created by Sean Evans, who worked on the huge, successful tour of "The Wall," recently completed by Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.
