State senate candidate fudged on his degrees

SEATTLE -- A candidate for a crucial Washington State Senate seat has been exaggerating his education credentials.

Republican hopeful Brad Toft described himself on his campaign website as a graduate of Seattle Pacific University and having "an executive degree in finance" from the University of Washington.

SPU says Toft attended but did not graduate. His UW degree was actually a certificate he received for completing a three-day course on finance.

Toft says the SPU description was an error by an intern. It has since been corrected.

Political leaders from both parties are closely watching Toft's race because the outcome of the 5th District race could determine the balance of power in the state Senate. The district covers parts of eastern King County, such as Issaquah and Maple Valley.
