Tutor: Effort aims to help Marysville kids
The United Way of Snohomish County and the Marysville School District have launched a program to bring volunteer reading tutors into several local classrooms.
The Rolling Readers Program will put volunteer reading tutors in Liberty, Pinewood and Shoultes elementary schools reading with children for 15 minutes at a time.
Each volunteer will come in once a week, from 2:15-3:45 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays starting Nov. 5, and work in teams to ensure continuity.
All volunteers must participate in one of two training sessions that will take place at the Red Barn at Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road in Marysville.
Training will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 24 and from 2:30-5 p.m. Nov. 1.

Apply: Ferry group needs members
The Island County Board of Commissioners seeks applicants for the Coupeville Ferry Committee.
Members are appointed to four-year terms and meet as needed to discuss the concerns of the ferry user groups and relay that information to lawmakers in Olympia.
These are volunteer positions.

Eat: Camp Fire lunch unveils new look
National Camp Fire President Cathy Tisdale is expected to headline Camp Fire of Snohomish County’s annual WoHeLo Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 25 at the Everett Holiday Inn, 3105 Pine St.
Tisdale will announce a new brand and logo for Camp Fire. She will also present the new “Thrive Theory of Change” curriculum.
The local Camp Fire program has worked for a year to refresh its image and draw in a new generation to its youth programs.

Volunteer: Help horses help people
Hope Therapeutic Riding Center plans a volunteer training session at 5 p.m. Friday at its north end location, 430 Plum Creek Lane, Coupeville.
The nonprofit aims to empower children and adults facing special challenges through activities and therapy centered on horses.
No horse experience is required. Volunteers help students groom, tack and care for horses and either lead horses or serve as “sidewalkers” to help balance students.
Volunteers also are needed to help with office tasks, maintenance, art, events, fundraising and more.

Donate: Soup kitchen needs reliable wheels
The Salt of the Earth Food Bank and Soup Kitchen could use a newer box truck to pick up food from local food banks for its weekly meals.
The nonprofit serves meals at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays from Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2531 Hoyt Ave., Everett.
A van used now is “well-used and getting tired,” president Sandra Richards said. “(We) can’t afford to keep putting money into it.”
