Public hearing on changes to Everett mill site
The Everett Planning Commission plans to discuss zoning options Tuesday
Planning commissioners have been exploring what type of zoning would put the shoreline area to best use, with creating jobs a top priority. So far, the favored option appears to be keeping the shoreline zoned for heavy industry that relies on waterfront access.
Other considerations are giving the public ways to use the area and to what extent the city should allow commercial activities, such as business parks, that don't need to be near the water.
Tuesday's meeting, at 6:30 p.m., is a public hearing and could lead to a vote on a plan. After approving a plan, the commissioners would send it to the City Council for approval at a later meeting.
The location for Tuesday's meeting is the 4th Floor Weyerhaeuser Meeting Room at Everett Station, 3201 Smith St.
Information about different plans under consideration is posted on the Everett planning department web page at http://tinyurl.com/EverettWaterfront.
More than 700 people lost jobs when Dallas-based Kimberly-Clark closed its mill in April. Demolition began in August. The company is trying to sell the 66-acre mill property.
Also, the state Department of Ecology has been taking steps to clean up dioxins and petroleum leftovers at the old mill property. The state is accepting public comments through Nov. 14 on a draft cleanup plan.
A related public meeting is scheduled for 6-8:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Snohomish County Public Utility District, 2320 California St., Everett.
