Singapore Airlines is ordering more Airbus A380s and A350s and transferring its order of Boeing 787s to its low-budget carrier, Scoot.
The carrier placed an order for five A380 jets and 20 A350 aircraft. The deal is valued at $7.5 billion at list prices, though jet makers typically discount from those prices.
As the launch operator of the A380, Singapore Airlines’ follow-on order gives Airbus’ super jumbo jet program a boost in a year when A380 orders have been scarce.
“This major order will provide us with additional growth opportunities and is consistent with our longstanding policy of maintaining a young and modern fleet. It demonstrates our commitment to the Singapore hub, and our confidence in the strength of the market for premium full-service travel,” Goh Choon Phong, Singapore Airlines’ CEO, said in a statement.
This order brings the total number of A380s ordered by the carrier to 24. Singapore Airlines has 40 A350 XWBs on order with Airbus. The European company just opened the A350 XWB assembly line on Tuesday in Toulouse, France.
“This announcement from one of the world’s most prestigious carriers underscores the unrivalled comfort and efficiency offered by Airbus widebody aircraft,” John Leahy, Airbus’ chief operating officer of customers, said in a statement.
Singapore Airlines also said on Wednesday that it is transferring its order for 20 Boeing 787s to its low-cost subsidiary Scoot to support the airline’s growth plans.
