The Seahawks play in Detroit this Sunday, and in case you hadn’t heard, the Lions have themselves a pretty darn talented receiver by the name of Calvin Johnson. One of the most prolific receivers in the NFL the past couple of seasons, the 6-foot-5 Johnson is known by the nickname, Megatron.
Now for those of you who didn’t grow up in the ’80s, or who aren’t fan of bad Michael Bay movies (I’d say that “bad Michael Bay movies” is redundant, except how can you not love Bad Boys?), Megatron is the main villain in the Transformers cartoon/comic book/movie, etc.
So this week, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who is never one to back away from a challenge, updated his Twitter Account so his name now shows up not as Richard Sherman, but rather Optimus Prime, who just happens to be the good guy in the Transformers.
Having some fun on Twitter aside, Sherman says facing Johnson is no different than getting ready for any other opponent.
“Same challenge as every week,” he said. “It ain’t no different for me, I don’t care who’s out there. It’s the league, you’re going to have a good receiver out there every week.”
Asked if he was looking forward to facing one of the game’s best receivers, Sherman said, “I look forward to every week. Get my hands on something.”
Sherman said that in some ways, he’s prefer to face a big receiver like Johnson than a smaller, quicker one.
“Shoot, it actually might be a little less of an issue, the height,” he said. “Closer to the same size, you move similar to him. It’s better than the small little guys who you don’t move the same as. He’s got a long stride, I’ve got a long stride, it’s similar body types.”
Sherman also had an opinion (of course) on the back and forth between Pete Carroll and San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh, who happened to have been Sherman’s college coach.
To recap briefly, Harbaugh implied last week that Sherman and Brandon Browner were getting away with too much contact. Carroll then pointed out in a radio interview that it was Harbaugh who a week earlier had criticized New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride for an “outrageous, irrational statement” after Gilbride said 49ers defensive end Justin Smith “gets away with murder” committing defensive holding.
“Sometimes, man, when a bully gets bullied, that’s how that happens,” Sherman said. “He’s the same guy who said the other guy was irrational and ignorant for talking about the refs.”
