Monroe: Learn to cook healthy food
A nationwide movement to promote healthy, affordable and sustainable eating is coming to Monroe. Fryelands Elementary School is hosting a Food Day from 3:30 to 5 p.m. today at 15286 Fryelands Blvd. There will be cooking demonstrations and door prizes.

Snohomish: Fire chief set to retire
Longtime Snohomish Fire Chief Mark Collins announced his plans to retire last week.
The commissioners at Snohomish County Fire District 4 in Snohomish are still figuring out how they’ll move forward.
Collins served as a volunteer firefighter and firefighter for more than 36 years, and was hired in Snohomish in 1981. He’s been chief since 2004. A community celebration is planned.
Police fundraiser for Special Olympics
Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick and Snohomish police officers will spend Thursday serving food at a Snohomish restaurant to raise money for charity.
The “Tip-A-Cop” event is planned from 6 p.m. to closing at El Paraiso Mexican Grill, 1431 Ave. D.
All tips and donations collected by the sheriff and officers go to support Special Olympics Washington.
Stanwood: Captain Puget remembered
Linda McCune, widow of longtime local broadcaster Don McCune, plans a presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27130 102nd Ave. NW, under the sponsorship of the Stanwood Area Historical Society, www.sahs-fncc.org.
Don McCune, who died in 1993, was known as Captain Puget to youngsters growing up in Western Washington from 1957 to 1966. McCune’s “Exploration Northwest” series ran from 1960 to 1981, winning 26 Emmy Awards for documentary excellence.
