Lotz back, Holowenko out, and more
That gave the Tips three healthy goaltenders on the roster, and Cole Holowenko was the odd-man out as he was reassigned today. Holowenko was acquired just before the start of the season in exchange for defenseman Evan Morden and goaltender Andy Desautels to give the Tips experience in net. However, Holowenko struggled in his four appearances with Everett, compiling a 6.41 goals against average and .808 save percentage. The Tips acquired Daniel Cotton from Seattle when Lotz was injured, and Cotton played well during Everett's eastern swing to pass Holowenko on the depth chart. Holowenko's destination is yet to be determined, though his junior A rights are held by the BCHL's West Kelowna Warriors.
The Tips may have been tempting fate by making the move. Both Lotz and Cotton went down during practice today after taking shots that found their way through the padding. However, both recovered and finished practice.
It was an eventful practice today at Comcast Arena, one that was interrupted when a panel of glass shattered. Kudos to winger Lucas Grayson for his contributions to the clean-up and installation of the replacement pane, but shouldn't Trent Lofthouse have been the one doing that, since he was responsible for breaking the glass?
In other news, the WHL announced the rosters for the upcoming Canada-Russia Super Series, which is used by Hockey Canada as an evaluation tool for the World Junior Hockey Championships. Only one Everett player made the cut as captain Ryan Murray, who played for Canada at last year's World Juniors, will play in the game Nov. 14 in Vancouver. Everett does not have any weekday games that week, so Murray shouldn't miss any Tips time.
And for those who might have missed it, former Tips winger Cody Fowlie was picked up off waivers by the Kelowna Rockets earlier this week. Fowlie was squeezed out in Everett when the Tips selected defenseman Connor Cox in the overager draft. The Rockets claimed Fowlie because they have two overagers, including former Tip JT Barnett, out injured.
