STANWOOD — The Spartans attacked the Ferndale goal early and often, scoring three goals in the first 35 minutes en route to a 4-1 win over the Golden Eagles in a 3A District 1 girls soccer first-round game at Bob Larson Stadium.
Lauren Allison scored two of the goals and assisted on a third. The junior forward had a number of other scoring chances, including a shot that went off the right goalpost only to be put in off the rebound by Ashley Hughes for the game’s first goal.
“She’s a fantastic player that dominates the game,” said Stanwood head coach Kyle Veach. “She’s best as a team player and something special happens when she gets on the ball”
Ferndale answered Hughes’ goal a minute later when Carly Bannerman scored a shot out of a scrum in front of the Stanwood goal mouth to tie the score.
From there it was all Stanwood. Eleven minutes after Ferndale’s equalizer, Allison scooted a hard shot on the ground past the Ferndale defense and goalkeeper and into the back of the net to help Stanwood retake the lead.
Just before halftime Allison did it again, this time crossing a nice pass from the right flat to wide open teammate Ashley Holstrom in front of the Ferndale goal. Holstrom had no problem scoring past the Golden Eagles goalkeeper to give Stanwood an insurance goal before halftime.
Stanwood lost midfielder Camryn Cross when she reaggravated a hip pointer midway through the game. But Veach credited fellow midfielder Cross, before she left, and Adesn Vanderpool with dominating the middle of the field.
Veach said he expects Cross to play in the Spartans’ next game, which will be against No. 1 seed Meadowdale on Tuesday.
