Q: I heard you’re involved in a several programs at Lake Stevens High School.
A: ASB and DECA are my two pride and joys and then also advanced placement classes. I’m in AP government right now and then University of Washington English, and I’m finishing up my foreign language, which is Spanish. Then I’m just volunteering as much as I can. I do work with the American Legion because they sent me to Girls State and Girls Nation.
Q: Tell me about ASB.
A: I’m the executive officer here. I was involved in ASB in seventh grade at Cedarcrest (Middle School) but as far as ASB in the high school, this is my first year. I love it. Right now the biggest thing we have coming up is the Martin Luther King Jr. assembly in January. We’re going to have Houston Kraft, a phenomenal speaker, speak on a Monday, and then that’s going to open it up for a whole diversity week.
Q: What do you tell students who are unfamiliar with DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America)?
A: Poor kids, they ask me about DECA, and I could go on for hours and hours. In a nutshell, I would explain it as the hidden treasure of the school because students who aren’t involved in it, they’re really missing out. Even if they’re not as active as I am just the content of the class like your W-2 forms, how to write a resume, or how to interact professionally with people are all life skills that can take you far, and that you don’t normally learn in a typical class. I tell them it’s worth it.
Q: You’re working with another student on a project called the Chapter Awards Program. What is that?
A: It is a book, and it pretty much documents what we do as a DECA chapter. Last year we didn’t get on the stage but fortunately we placed and were able to go to Nationals in Utah. My goal this year is to get on that stage and the biggest thing that will hopefully make us reach that goal is we’re going to focus on the content of the book.
Q: Can you give an example of what DECA has done so far this year to add to the book?
