Drive: Help with cancer patient appointments

The Cancer Resource Center at the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership needs volunteers who can drive cancer patients to treatments and appointments.

Volunteers use their own vehicles and get mileage reimbursement.

“We need them desperately here in the Everett, Marysville and Arlington area,” said Jerri Wood, quality of life manager for the American Cancer Society’s Great West Division in Everett.

Sponsor: Food bank gears up for holidays

The Snohomish Community Food Bank expects to hand out 425 holiday meals this year to needy families, and it’s looking for donations to help meet the need.

Food bank staff especially hope to find groups of people willing to provide a menu item and bring in 100, 225 or 425 of that item.

“This way, we can control the inventory, receive exactly what we need and offer the same menu to all families,” Director Elizabeth Grant said in a press release. “We have a list of about 30 items that we would like to collect to make it a nice dinner for everyone.”

The food bank also seeks turkeys (8–12 pounds) for Thanksgiving, and hams (4–8 pounds) and whole chickens (4 pounds) for Christmas.

Meals are slated to be delivered Nov. 16 for Thanksgiving and Dec. 14 for Christmas. The food bank also is collecting toys for a giving tree.

Donate: Toys and food for Sky Valley families

The Volunteers of America Sky Valley and its food bank in Sultan are teaming with the Monroe Fred Meyer for a toy and food drive.

Donations will be collected from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Monroe Fred Meyer, 18805 U.S. 2.

Toys are collected as part of the Dave Wood Giving Tree Program, a 15-year tradition that distributes gifts to children from low-income families.

“Last year, we were able to help 325 kids,” said Volunteers of America’s Jennifer Reasoner in a press release. “This year, we’re expecting the need to be greater and we are hoping that the kind folks in the communities will be able to help some struggling children have a great Christmas.”

Listen: Help evaluate student presentations

The Mukilteo School District seeks community members to help judge culminating project presentations. The commitment would be about three hours of time on a weekday afternoon.

In order to graduate from high school, all students in the state are required to complete a culminating project. In Mukilteo, students are asked to give a 20-minute presentation that reflects on their accomplishments as a student and as a person, what has shaped the student’s academic and career direction, and where the student plans to go in the future. The presentations include artifacts from the student’s schoolwork and provide time for questions.

Each student presentation is given to a panel of two people: a teacher or administrator from the high school and an adult from the community. Community volunteers listen to and help evaluate several presentations.

Presentations at Kamiak High School are scheduled for 2:30-5:30 p.m. Nov. 13-14, Jan. 15 and 17, Feb. 12 and 14, and April 16 and 18. To volunteer, contact David Williams at 425-366-5435 or Cynthia Davis at 425-366-5436.

Student presentations at Mariner High School are scheduled for 1:30-5 p.m. Nov. 14, Dec. 19, Jan. 23, Feb. 13, May 1, and May 29. Contact Kristine Whipple at 425-366-5735.
