SEATTLE — For a University of Washington women’s basketball team that lost five seniors from last year’s team and already lost its top recruit to a knee injury, the hits keep coming.
Coach Kevin McGuff said Tuesday that freshman Heather Corral, one of just three Huskies taller than 6-feet, is questionable for Friday’s season opener after suffering an undisclosed injury at practice. He also said junior Kellie McCann-Smith will continue to be sidelined for personal reasons.
That could leave UW with just seven scholarship players, plus sophomore walk-on Kassia Fortier, when the Huskies open Friday night at home against St. Mary’s.
“We just play other people more minutes, that’s it,” McGuff said.
Corral was injured in practice last week, although McGuff said he would not know the specifics of the injury for another day or two. The 6-foot-1 freshman from Vancouver — she spent part of her childhood living near Snohomish — did not practice Tuesday and wore ice on her right shoulder, her right hand and her right knee while watching the session.
