The Columbian reported that Democratic Rep. Tim Probst took the lead over Republican Sen. Don Benton in the 17th district after Friday's count. The race will head into automatic recount if results remain this close.
More than 8,500 ballots are yet to be counted in Clark County.
County election officials begin a recount in races that are closer than 2,000 votes and closer than one half of a percentage point.
Rather than seek election to a third House term, Probst ran to unseat Benton. More than $1.1 million was spent on the race by the candidates and their supporters.
Currently, Democrats hold a 27-22 majority in the Senate with at least two senators willing to cross party lines to side with Republicans.
