BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A Beaverton High School student who was crowned homecoming queen a month ago died Sunday of a rare form of thyroid cancer.

Students selected Maddie Lauer, 14, as their homecoming queen even though she was only a freshman.

Friends of Maddie told a TV station they're wearing purple -- her favorite color -- to school Tuesday.
