Everett CC women win cross country championship

The Everett Community College women’s cross country team captured five of the top seven spots and breezed to its second straight Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship on Saturday at Plante’s Ferry Park in Spokane.

Freshman Marren Haneberg, a graduate of Glacier Peak High School, led the way for the Trojans, placing second in 18 minutes, 39.4 seconds over the 5,000-meter course. She finished 39 seconds behind winner Jessica Mildes, a freshman from Spokane.

Everett CC’s other top finishers were sophomore Katie Strong (Port Lions, Alaska), third in 18:41.4; sophomore Veronica Hall (Marysville Getchell), fourth in 18:43.9; freshman Rachel Cundy (Lakewood), fifth in 18:51.0; and sophomore Catie Arrigoni (Oroville), seventh in 19:03.0.

The Trojans finished with 21 points to place well ahead of runner-up Spokane, which had 58. It was the third title in four years for Everett CC.

“We came here expecting to win and took care of business,” Everett coach Matt Koenigs said in an email. “Our women are mostly sophomores, and those upperclassmen did everything we asked them to, starting with winter training last year. They have their work ethic to thank for this (win).

“We set out to see them all perform to the best of their ability believing that if we could accomplish that, then the title would take care of itself — and that is certainly what happened.”

The Everett CC men, who won the NWAACC title a year ago, placed third with 51 points, trailing Spokane CC (38) and Lane CC (48). Sophomore Aaron Campbell (Cascade) was the top Everett CC finisher, finishing third in 25:24.8 on the 8,000-meter course.

“I’m proud of our guys,” Koenigs said. “They gave everything they had today and we had some very good performances.”
